Not an extra opinion

What should I wear today, Holy Spirit?

“Those black trousers and the green shirt with the orange bag.”

Oh! I love that shirt, but I’ll carry my black bag instead. The orange is a bit too much for me. Holy Spirit, you understand, right? Thank you!

Holy Spirit, what should I propose to my boss at work?

“Propose the start of a new project: the production of “African Light Bulbs”. Suggest launching it in one month and inviting the Governors to the event.”

Wow Holy Spirit, this idea is exceptional! I will propose the African Light Bulb Project, but let’s give it three months, who knows how the implementation will go, as for the governors, I might need to find CEOs that are already affiliated with the business instead, Governors are a far-reach. Thank you for this superb idea.

Holy Spirit, I had a fight with my fiancé. What should I say? He always forgets important things about our relationship and is always too busy.

“Prepare a wonderful dinner for him, garnish it beautifully. After he’s done eating, sit quietly and say nothing. He will realize his mistakes.”

Holy Spirit, I don’t think he’ll take me seriously. Your approach is always too gentle. I am human, if I don’t shout or express my pain, he’ll take me for granted. You are too gentle abeg

Holy Spirit, reveal my destiny assignment and show me what you want me to do for the Kingdom of God.
“…………………………………………………………………………..”

Show me, Lord. Open me up. You can’t be silent. I seek Your will, not mine. I will follow Your instructions. Open me up and let me do Your will.
“…………………………………………………………………………..”

Oh well, sometimes, God’s answer is to wait, I believe this is why He is silent. This might be God telling me to wait, but in the meantime, I’ll start an orphanage in His name. I am sure He will bless it.

The Holy Spirit is not an extra opinion. He is the One left in the stead of Jesus, the Messiah, that gave His life as a ransom for us.

John 16:13: “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.”

When we seek guidance, we cannot selectively obey. We can’t choose to obey some instructions and ignore others. Sometimes, a unique style of dressing might be a message to someone, or it might simply be an instruction we need to obey.

Someone once said, “My obedience to all instructions helps God to trust me. He can rely on the fact that I will obey even the silliest thing, even if it embarrasses me.” Also, a minister of God quoted this, “Understanding is not a prerequisite for obedience.” There is an instruction; just obey. In 1 Samuel 15, Saul did what seemed logical by sparing the choicest animals instead of slaughtering them as God commanded. Those animals could have been sold for a good sum, but that wasn’t the point. There was an instruction, and he needed to obey. It’s not an extra opinion!

Imagine how our character in this story would feel if, in a few weeks, she unexpectedly gained access to all the Governors of the Federation. How would she feel that she didn’t execute her project in a month as instructed?

You see, not every instruction has a visible outcome at the end of the day. An instruction is just that—an instruction. It demands obedience. It is better we obey than carry out our own plans.

At the end of the story, the Holy Spirit was silent when she asked because He knew she wouldn’t obey. She already had her own plans in mind before seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance. She believed she could do her project and that God would bless it regardless. Sadly, that’s not how it works. It’s not that her project was necessarily bad, but she was risking working against God’s will. Now that is the danger!

If this piece is difficult to understand in any way, I recommend listening to a message or reading a book on the Kingdom of God, particularly one that talks about destiny assignments.
